What is there to visit in Chamonix in summer?

The main attraction is, of course, Mont-Blanc (4810m). Climbing it on foot is the preserve of capable mountaineers carrying specialist equipment, but you can admire the famous peak without making the effort from a number of view points that can be reached by cable car, telecabin or mountain railway.

Of the various ski lifts you can take, some are to be found in Chamonix itself, and others are located in the surrounding area, within a radius of 20 km.

Aiguille du Midi cable car
Without a doubt the most impressive view point, because of its altitude (3842 m) and its proximity to Mont-Blanc. Approximate time required: 2-3 hrs (allow 3-4 hrs in busy periods).
  Montenvers Mer de glace train
Setting off from Chamonix, the famous little red train will take you to the Mer de Glace. Approximate time required: 2-3 hrs (allow 3-4 hrs in busy periods).
Brévent cable car
On the south-facing slope, dominating Chamonix, the Brévent summit gives you a sweeping view of the whole of the Mont-Blanc chain.
  Flégère cablecar
Located at les Praz, 2 km from Chamonix, towards Martigny (Switzerland) on the south-facing slope, la Flégère is the starting point for the not-to-be-missed walk to the Lac Blanc.
Grands Montets cable car
At Argentière, 8 km from Chamonix, towards Martigny in Switzerland. Splendid views over the Aiguille Verte and the Drus.
  Tramway du Mont-Blanc
Located at le Fayet, 23 km from Chamonix, towards Sallanches. This little mountain railway offers you a picturesque trip through the forest to the Nid d'Aigle (Eagle’s Nest).
Le Tour gondola
Located at Tour, 12 km from Chamonix, towards Martigny in Switzerland. An area made up of alpine pastures near the Swiss border..
  Vallorcine gondola
Located at Vallorcine, 20 km from Chamonix, towards Martigny in Switzerland, allows access to the alpine pastures at Balme, an ideal spot for mountain biking.
Prarion gondola.
Located at Les Houches,  8 km from Chamonix. View over the Mont-Blanc range, departure point of many hikes.
  Bossons chairlift
Leaving from les Bossons village (2 km from Chamonix), exceptional view of the Bossons glacier. Access to a theme trail relating the history of the glacier.

Single ticket or pass?

You can buy each of these excursions separately, several tickets are available, one-way, return, rover tickets etc.
See prices for each attraction  >>PLUS

We’d like to point out that you can buy a number of packages (over one or more days), which are good value if you’re thinking of visiting more than one attraction during your holiday. We call this package the Mont-Blanc Multipass.

Should I book in advance?

Chamonix has one real peak period, usually between 15 July and 20 August. During this period, you could experience delays at the following attractions: :

  • Aiguille du Midi
  • Montenvers
  • Tramway du Mont-Blanc

You can book a place on the Aiguille du Midi cable car or the Mont-Blanc Tramway. This advance booking is completely separate from you ticket: for example, when you book by internet, the system provides you with a booking number (you don't pay anything at the time).
When you get to the attraction, you have priority at the “booking” window. You can then choose whether to buy a ticket just for that attraction or a Mont-Blanc Multipass. Full details on how to book >>PLUS

Advance booking on the Montenvers railway is not possible. If you want to avoid delays during the busy periods, we advise you to:
  •   Avoid the rush hour by going up before 10.00 a.m.
  •  Buy your ticket in advance – a single ticket or a Mont-Blanc Multipass (this will avoid waiting at the ticket office as you go straight to the platform)

When can I buy on-line?

You can buy Mont-Blanc Multipasses on line from this web site (single and return tickets for the individual attractions are only on sale at the ticket offices).

The most important thing is to have your ticket already when you arrive in Chamonix, which could save you waiting in the ticket office (if you buy your tickets 8 days before leaving home, you can choose to have your passes sent to your home address)

Please note: When buying on line, you must indicate the date when you will start using the pass.

At the same time, it is always advisable to book in advance for the Aiguille du Midi and/ or the Mont-Blanc Tramway if you are proposing to use your Multipass on these attractions.
