  Safety
Pay attention in any circumstances

 Sun

At altitude the reflection of the sun on the snow and the ice is extremely strong. Sunglasses are indispensable and sun-cream is strongly recommended.

Temperatures

Even on beautiful summer day, the temperature at the top of the Aiguille du Midi, the Grands Montets, Brévent, Flégère, and the Nid d'Aigle is often below 0°C. The temperature regularly falls below -10°C. Plan ahead to take warm clothes and shoes (pullover, windbreak, ear-muffs, etc.).

 Security in mountain

  • Choose your itinerary
According to your physical shape and that of your group, check the scale of the difficulties in a guide-book as well as the time of ascent and descent.
  • Check the weather
Check the weather forecasts for the day.
  • Prepare reserves
Plan a supply of water and food according to the length and difficulty of the route. Nevertheless, watch out not to overload your rucksack so that it is too heavy to carry.
  • Dress appropriately
Take waterproof, warm, light, strong clothes which are easy to put on and remove.
  • Wear proper footwear
Take comfortable, well fitting shoes which will support your ankles.
  • Take a first-aid kit
Take a properly stocked first-aid kit with you.
  • Pace yourself
Adopt an appropriate walking pace on the way up. The steeper the slope, the more your steps must be slow.
  • Take breaks
Take breaks of at least 5 minutes per hour, or a quarter of an hour every two hours.
  • Be vigilant
Be watchful on moraines, where slopes are sometimes very steep and the terrain dangerous. Be careful on masses of fallen rocks finishing on a rocky bar and of rock falls in couloirs. Use a stick to help your walking.
  • Breathe calmly
Breathe calmly, concentrate on your movements and to look upward rather than downward in case of dizziness.
