  Montenvers visit
A nature area accessible to all

The Montenvers area, at 1913m, offers you every facet of the high mountains: a unique spectacle provided by the Aiguille des Drus, Les Grandes Jorasses, and, of course, discovering a living glacier: La Mer de Glace.

The Crystal Gallery

This gallery, cut out of the rock, offers a collection of rare and beautiful specimens, coming for the mostpart from the 'massif': quartz, smoked quartz, ameythysts, etc. The history and portraits of the greatest crystal-hunters of the region complete this exhibition.

Museum of Alpine Fauna

Chamois, ibexes, moufflons, foxes, marmots, pheasants and grouse represent the best known animals living at this altitude.
Each scene in the exhibition presents a protected fauna.

History trails

To discover the history of the site, come and enjoy the various theme trails.

Nature trails

For people who love rambling, Montenvers is also the starting point for very pretty trails where the colourful sight of juniper, gentian, rhododendron and larch is an absolute delight.

Ice Grotto

Re-cut each year for over 50 years. You will enter the very heart of the glacier, into a chalet completely sculpted in the ice where, as though frozen in time, models in period costume show the mountain way of life of yesteryear.

Access by cable-car

The ice grotto and ice garden are accessible either by cable-car or via a path. The grotto is reached via a footbridge which has to be adjusted regularly because the glacier advances 80 to 90 metres a year. In winter, the cable-car enables Vallée Blanche skiers and mountaineers to join the Montenvers train before going back down to Chamonix.

The hike from Montenvers - Plan d l'Aiguille

The crossing from Montenvers to the Plan de l'Aiguille, a great summer classic on an overhanging path to join the first section of the Aiguille du Midi (duration : 2 ½ hours).

Hôtel-Restaurant du Montenvers

Built in 1880, the Hôtel du Montenvers has retained its authenticity. This superb building is an integral part of Chamonix’s most precious heritage. With stone and larch wood on the inside, the rooms evoke the evenings of yesteryear. With a thirty-three bed dormitory the facility combines, in summer only, the advantages of a mountain shelter and the comfort of a hotel. Its restaurant offers a varied selection of traditional dishes.
