Introduction to your journey

Leaving the centre of Chamonix,  the Montenvers rack and pinion railway gives you the opportunity to reach the foot of the Mer de Glace (1913 m) in just 20 minutes in total comfort and safety. The view of one of the biggest glaciers of the Alps is a must!.

Not to be missed on site

• the 14 km of the Mer de Glace and the view over the heart of the massif (the Drus and the Grandes Jorasses)
• the ice grotto carved out each year of the very heart of the glacier, can be reached via the gondola
